You cannot map any arbitrary measurement system color (CMYK) into a named color system color (Pantone). There may not be a color there, so now you're scrambling to find the nearest. Conversely, every Pantone color has a Munsell and CIE number. (and XRite owns both Pantone and Munsell and could probably tell you.)

Hello, I need to color convert path items stroke/fill in CMYK colorspace to RGB colorspace - essentially the functionality given by Edit > Edit Colors > Convert to RGB. In my code, I first select the path items. I then invoke the Convert to RGB menu action. However, nothing really happens. The colors stay in CMYK. The document color mode is RGB.
You could select a black filled object and as part of your action do a Select > Same > Fill Color. Change the color from CMYK to Grayscale in the Color Panel (maybe do the same for stroke color) and then change to RGB.
