Dive into the action with the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens. In an adrenaline-filled assignment, featured professional photographer Scott A. Wood
I spent a couple of hours today comparing my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR and a newly purchased Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 (APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM). This mini-review is from my standpoint, having used the Nikon for a while now. The Sigma was purchased by a friend who liked the idea of a fast fixed-aperture zoom, but not the price of Nikon glass. 1.
The Nikon 55-200mm DX VR II is a superb lightweight, plastic-mount lens with outstanding performance. New from the older 55-200mm DX VR is that this new lens collapses when not in use. It weighs 1 ounce (30g) less than the old model. While the focus distance is the same, this lens can make slightly larger images at its closest focus distance
I got a 70-200 2.8 AFS VR II on eBay. About $900. It's heavier, which I would live with. The focus ring was a little dry / sticky, the afs auto-focusing seemed a little clacky, not squeaky though. Perfectly fine for pictures but I wanted to use it for video. I sent a note for a rebuild estimate to Photo Tech in NYC.

But if I had to travel the world and only take three lenses with my Nikon D800E, it would be the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF-S G and the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S VR. That’s it
